The decision will be confirmed at the General Assembly, scheduled for 30 November

Pedro Proença has been appointed to the Presidency of the European Leagues Association (EL), a body that brings together 40 professional leagues representing more than 1,000 clubs from 34 European countries.

The appointment made by the Board of Directors of the European Leagues Association will be formally ratified during the next General Assembly of the organisation, scheduled for November 30.

The President of Liga Portugal has now been appointed to the position of President of the European Leagues, after the organisation has been governed by an Executive Committee for the last few years.

"After a period of careful reflection, I informed the members of the Board of Directors of my willingness to accept the invitation to take on the role of President of the European Leagues Association, a decision taken after receiving the indispensable guarantee that it would be compatible with the role of President of Liga Portugal. "Pedro Proença emphasises that this appointment, in a process carried out by some of the most important European leagues, "is clear proof of the international recognition of the work carried out by clubs and professional football in recent years, which has placed Liga Portugal on the Board of the European Leagues Association and in a suitable position for the presidency".

Among the main challenges facing Pedro Proença are:
1. Stabilization of the organization;
2. Implementation of the statutory review process;
3. Development and execution of the election process, outlining the profile for the next president in 2025;
4. Putting the European Leagues agenda as a top priority, ensuring representation for all leagues, clubs, and European competitions. Address challenges such as preserving competition competitiveness, defining post-2024 distribution keys, protecting national competition schedules, safeguarding the business model, and optimizing commercial and business activities.

Regarding the accumulation of the position with the presidency of the Liga Portugal, a position he has held since July 2015 and is currently serving his third consecutive term, Pedro Proença makes a point of giving his assurance: "I will not allow the presidency of the European Leagues Association to make me deviate one millimetre from the commitment I made in June this year to the clubs that make up professional football, who unanimously signed the electoral programme with which I presented myself for a new four-year term. With the same commitment and dedication as always, I will continue to lead the processes we have in place and remain steadfast in the uncompromising defence of the sustainability and competitiveness of professional football, objectives I set myself when I took over the presidency of Liga Portugal in 2015".
