Liga Portugal hereby expresses its deep concern regarding the recent developments related to the elections for the UEFA Executive Committee, scheduled for April 3rd, in which the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, Dr. Pedro Proença, is a candidate as the Portuguese representative.

The importance of Portugal continuing to have a representative on the UEFA Executive Committee has always been advocated by the Liga Portugal Board, which communicated this to the Portuguese Football Federation’s Board during its meeting in January.

The challenges facing Portuguese football, which are also of vital importance for the clubs in professional football, must not be overlooked. Similarly, the interests of Portuguese football should not be put at risk by someone who, as President of the Portuguese Olympic Committee, has the duty to protect them.

Liga Portugal reaffirms its support for the President of the Portuguese Football Federation in his candidacy for the UEFA Executive Committee and hopes that recent events do not jeopardise his election, as the harmful effects this could have on Portuguese football in general, and professional football in particular, would be significant.
